History

Jansen School of Dance is a family run Business that began in 1959 when Connie Jansen’s 2 young daughters wanted to sign up for dance class. “Well”, she said “if you want to learn to dance I will teach you.

Connie trained as a dancer in London England, where she grew up. She started teaching her girls and some of their friends on the cement garage pad in their back yard in Cold Lake, Alberta. They soon moved to Calgary and then to Winnipeg and she continued teaching dance in various community clubs throughout Winnipeg. Eventually daughters Connie Prichodko and Patsy Newman followed in their Mom’s footsteps and continued teaching dance as their families grew up dancing too.

They opened a full time dance studio on Portage Ave. for several years and traveled to many competitions across the country and also performed in many events within the city. With 2 young families to raise and not enough time between them they eventually closed the doors and continued as a part time business.

In 1992, Patsy began coming out to Stonewall to teach 26 students in the old Scout Hall. She eventually moved the classes to the Catholic Church and then to Centennial School to accommodate the expanding enrollment. Now with the option of offering 3 classes at once Patsy enlisted her daughters Carly and Paige and former students to join the team and share their love of dance with the children they teach. The girls have hopes of growing and expanding the business, their passion in the future.
